Gyani
Maya Sen. Kaunda, 74 years, was like forest. She wasn`t like to live in human society.
She spent their whole life in a forest as it is difficult to set and learn
social activities. Now, she lives in lamahi, 3 dang with her family. She feels sad
and unhappy even she doesn`t reach in the forest once a day.
Gyani Maya said – I feels
unhappy even I don`t reach forest once a day. Because I spent my whole childhood
in the forest with my father and mother. When I came society, in the starting
point I feels uncomfortable and surprised seeing their behavior and activities.
I couldn`t their language also. According to her family, there isn`t any change
on her lifestyle. She have son, six grandchildren and daughter in law. They
told that she should love the forest for her living. She thought that jangle is
a place where she would do whatever she liked .for example eating food and
moving in the forest. According to her son and daughter in law still her behave
is a like the past when she was in the forest.
Gyani Maya spent her
whole life in the forest. On that day her family lived jurmasina forest of
Rolpa. Later they migrated Barkot forest in Argakhachi now and then they came
and went in human society as her mother was 9 years old when her father Ball
bahadur kusunda died.
Then lived with her mother Gokuli, near human beings. She
said ̧̖ `They migrated in dang since 2024. ` On that day ̧ they lived together
making group 10-15 and spent their life a week and 15 days in a same place. She
memorialized that they didn`t have their own house, where they moved and went
that was her home .Home was covered by wood and dry leaves. They used to eat
wild fruits animals, birds and wild roots and asking with villagers. They run
their life difficulty.
Gyani Maya doesn`t use
to eat and drink milk, curd, and energetic food even she lives in a community
now a days, said her son Prem bahadur kusunda. His mother`s behaviors is still
wild. She doesn`t live comfort if she doesn`t go to forest now and again added
his son. Prem said that his mother believes on Dhamijhakri so, she doesn`t like
to go to hospital and take medicine also. According to him Gyan hadn`t gone
hospital. When she sick we call dhamijhakri. He checked her than she feels
well. Gyani Maya doesn`t like to stay in mass. She scolds her daughter in law
so, her daughter in law feels surprised. She added that her mother in law
doesn`t like to stay in mass of people and she feels odd on her behave and
again added that she never scolds her .But, they don`t have close relationship.
Kusunda who lives in
the area of western and Midwestern region of Nepal who are known as JANGALI.
They called themselves King of the forest because they lives in the forest.
According to the religious history BALMIKI RISHI produced kusunda. Sita who was
known as a wife of lord Ram left her child caring on Balimiki and went to
bathe. When she returned back, Rishi was in meditation so, she had to take her
child without any noticed. After meditation Rishi didn`t See the child anywhere then he made a
child of hay (kush ) the generation of kush is known kusunda now a days
according to kimmadant. Some years ago they became angry if they were called
kusunda. We call them BAANRAJA. But now a days they want to be told kusunda and
banraja. They don`t have many god and goddess as Hindu religion. Once a year
they worship PRITI PUJA on which they kept soil on stone (father /Bhale) and
(mother/pothi) as a bullet.
They still believe on
dhamijh and jadibuti. They don`t have to use milk, curd and dug. They used to
eat wild roots, wild fruits and wild animal as their food. They exchange and
killed animal like deer and chital with grains in a village. They used to live
hut, cave and bush according to the monsoon-women are used to go village for
asking food and food grains –Arrows are used to pray wild animals. They bow
brooms and live in a house which has kush-roof as they are son of Kush. They
thought they were the king of the forest and Raute are their people. Now a day’s
life style, culture and tradition of kusunda is in crisis. Gyani Maya is one of
the member who can speak her limit language. Her family also can’t understand
their language. Gyani Maya share her experience no one understand my language
in society even my son also so, I feels sad .It is more difficult to adjust in
human society for me.
Kusunda language is known as a special language
according to the people who study about the language it has some mix-up differ
language Kham and magar. Researcher uday alle said it is more difficult to
understand kusunda language .It is going to crisis. Many years ago they live in
forest but now a days they became as a part of society some of them are rude
who don`t like to spend that life as human beings. They feels that living is
better than in a society. Some words of
kusunda ,one (kasti), two (Dukhu), three (Dahat), four (pings ), five (pangu)
,gold (Kapujung), Home (uhi) ,cloth (paiji) ,cap (Malu) ,you (Nu), I (Chi), father
(YeI), mother (mai,) etc.
According to David E Waters kusunda left their
moving life due to difficult wild life, scatter of the group and the rareness
of girl for their wedding. They also left wild life and start living in village
due to intercaste marriage. Most of them have done intercaste of kshetri, magar,
kumal and Bk. One of data shows, there
are 4160 kusunda in Nepal. The chairman of high committee Om gurung indicated
that around 10 spacies of jangati are in danger. Raute and kusunda are one of
them Government announced that every kusunda has got five hundred allowance. It
makes the kusunda to come and from the wild life. Government provides money to
make their home in pyuthan, Rolpa, Dang –Deukhuri and surkthet. One lakh
seventy five thousand and one lakh sixty thousand for the kusunda who live in
terai but some are still back to get the
